Detectives in the UK charged two men with murder after former Lostprophets singer and convicted pedophile Ian Watkins was stabbed to death in prison.
British authorities have charged two men with murder after former Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins, 48, was stabbed to death in a West Yorkshire prison, where he was serving a 29-year sentence for child sex crimes.
A murder investigation is still underway, according to West Yorkshire police, who confirmed the arrests of Rashid Gedel, 25, and Samuel Dodsworth, 43.
Emergency services were called to HMP Wakefield on Saturday (October 11), after Watkins was attacked with a knife. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
In 2013, Watkins pleaded guilty to 13 horrific charges, including trying to rape a baby, sexually touching a baby, encouraging a fan to abuse her child, and making child pornography. He also conspired with some of the mothers of children he abused; two of those mothers received 14 and 17 year prison sentences.
A judge told him at the time he had “plumbed new depths of depravity,” and that Watkins showed “evident delight” in abusing children, showing an “almost complete lack of remorse” for his behavior.
During the trial, Watkins claimed he didn’t remember committing his crimes because he was heavily abusing drugs, including heroin, at the time. However, he also claimed he didn’t know “what everyone is getting so worked up about.”
In a conversation with a friend the month before his sentence, Watkins allegedly said he was going to put out a statement that “it was megalolz, I don’t know what everyone is getting so freaked out about.” The court later asked him if, after his sentencing, he still believed his actions were “megalolz.” Watkins replied, “No, it’s just lolz now.”
Watkins’ ex-girlfriend reportedly warned police about him numerous times, beginning in 2008. She even collected information related to the offenses and the two mothers who were sentenced alongside him—but police didn’t step in until a tipoff involving drugs in late 2012.
